South African wine and Gourmet Food

South African Food and Wine & published by Dorrance Publishing is a beautiful Cookbook. I was impressed by the section of the Centre of beautiful, well arranged photographs mouthwatering recipes with each ingredient listed first (with no surprises in the middle of a recipe) and all measurements are given in customary and metric measurements; This volume as the cookery book marking is truly international!

My one and only disappointment was that the traditional dishes of South Africa occupy only the top 77 or thereabouts, 300 pages book. Although, as the authors explain forward interesting enough, South Africa, as the United States of America is a melting pot of different ethnicities. Further examination of the book certainly proves this statement: Middle Eastern dishes, are represented, Italian sauces, Chinese chicken salad recipes & nice cheesecake.

From the traditional section my family enjoyed especially Bobotie, a dish of spiced ground beef, first pan browned, then baked in a pastry cream dressing and served with rice and a delicious selection of condiments. Monkey steak gland, also from traditional recipes section certainly caught our eye! And is not made with monkey glands, but it is a recipe for a delicious BBQ sauce.

We found that several other favored by international cookbook section as well. Some examples are the chicken in Barbecue Sauce, Balsamic Chicken Javanese and a delicious Pasta Salad grilled Veggie &. Two or three wine suggestions are listed below each entrée; and a list of suppliers for South African products from United States and Canada, a very useful, is listed in the content page.

What was my favorite recipe from the book? After considering this question a while I must admit that was a dessert: Banana ginger cake. Dense, moist and spicy, it was absolutely delicious. Usually banana breads taste ... Well, like bananas! But this concoction had a nice, not enough bananas, highly spiced flavor. It disappeared very quickly and has earned a place of honor in "favorite sweet bread section" My Rolodex!

South African Gourmet Food and wine is a cookbook I am happy to include in my cookbook collection and is a volume which I am sure will become well-worn and smudges, as I refer to it again over the years!

I received a free copy of South African Gourmet Food and wine as a member of the Dorrance Publishing book review team.
