Does Gourmet Tea Really Have Health Benefits Or Does it Just Taste Good?

Hot gourmet tea, especially in the cooler nights during the winter, is a great way to relax in the evening. Although red wine has been discovered to have extensive health benefits, drinking wine every night is definitely not a good general health plan. During those hot days of summer, many find that iced tea more refreshing than a carbonated soda. It isn't surprising that tea has been gaining in popularity for many years, but it is interesting to find that gourmet tea lovers can tout their favorite drink with a long list of newly discovered health benefits.

Jeffrey Blumberg, PhD, FACN, chief of the Antioxidants Research Laboratory at Tufts University, has cited tea as one of the top healthy foods for 2010 and the future. "The scientific evidence about tea is evolving and I think it's compelling," says Blumberg. The past decade has yielded substantial research that, according to Blumberg, shows that "there is a pretty consistent body of evidence suggesting there is a benefit to tea. Tea is a very rich source of a specific kind of antioxidant - flavonoids."

Studies are still somewhat inconsistent. One study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition followed nearly 40,000 women for almost seven years, coming to a conclusion that drinking four cups of tea a day produced no reduction in their risk of heart disease. However, Blumberg points out that the bulk of research does indicate that regular tea drinkers (those that drink two or more cups a day) have less heart disease and stroke, lower cholesterol, and may recover from heart attacks more quickly. Early laboratory studies indicate that there may be a relationship between tea consumption and reduced risk of several types of cancer.

Antioxidants seem to have become the morning news and talk show buzz word lately, replacing last decade's interest in the health benefits of soy products. Antioxidants are substances that can reduce certain types of environmental damage, oxidative damage, in the body which helps maintain healthy cells and tissues. The latest research suggests that tea is full of these antioxidants. In particular, black tea and green tea has been shown to have positive health benefits. Interestingly, decaffeinating the tea does not decrease its level of healthy antioxidants in any way.

There is a huge variety of choices of gourmet tea available, but it is important to purchase high quality tea that is fresh. Most tea goes stale within six months. Not only does stale tea have less antioxidants, but it just doesn't taste very good.

For gourmet tea lovers, there is one more benefit that rarely gets mentioned in all this scientific stuff. Assuming you do not add milk, sugar or honey to tea, tea has no calories. That makes it much easier to continue eating that other newly discovered haven for antioxidants: Dark Chocolate.

Dark Gourmet Chocolate is Healthy - Is it Really?

There are a lot of "dark gourmet chocolate" companies entering the wellness industry over the last year. The claim is that the product is "healthy." We've seen the commercials, ads and the media feature it. So I decided to look in to this myself from a health and nutrition perspective.

I am personally not a chocolate eater so I've never had any interest except that I find it intriguing from a marketing perspective. How can a "chocolate product" be marketed as healthy?

I selected one of the Direct Selling "healthy gourmet chocolate" companies and reviewed its marketing materials and ingredients.

Ingredients & Marketing

The main source of the product is dark chocolate, with each of the packaged varieties having added nutritional elements including sweeteners, berry powders, vitamins, minerals, probiotics, and omegas.

While the story of the "healthy chocolate" makes for great marketing and lends itself to a greater interest from the poor dietary habits of people today; after further reading it appears this requires further investigation (even more than what I will provide here). Besides the antioxidant story the main selling feature in the product is the natural sweetener called agave.

The dark gourmet chocolate product I reviewed lists these key selling features:

It is diabetic friendly due to the sweetener from agave, which comes from a cactus like plant. The literature claims the agave is very safe.
The product itself has a low glycemic index and will not cause increases in blood sugar, and that the antioxidants found in this gourmet chocolate, helps promote cardiovascular health.
The literature says that it may help with weight loss as it provides natural energy and increases your sense of well-being.

Agave Sweetener - what is it?

The Agave syrup found in "healthy chocolate" was originally used to make tequila. When Agave syrup ferments it turns to tequila. The enzymes activity must be stopped so that the syrup will not turn into tequila for use in healthy chocolate.

Agave Syrup is advertised as low glycemic and marketed safe for diabetics. According to my reading, it is true that agave itself is low glycemic but we have to consider why. The reason is due to the unusually high concentration of fructose (90%) compared to the small amount of glucose (10%).

Even though fructose is low on the glycemic index, there are numerous problems associated with the consumption of fructose in such high concentrations, the same as found in other sweeteners.

High Amounts of Fructose

High amounts of concentrated fructose may cause health problems ranging from mineral depletion, to insulin resistance, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and it even causes miscarriages in pregnant women.

Whole foods such as fruits contain a much smaller amount of fructose compared to sucrose and glucose, as well as a full spectrum of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, fiber, enzymes and other nutrients. These are the nutritional needs of the body. Concentrated sweeteners from food sources such as the agave plant contain no fiber and have much greater concentrations of simple sugars than are found in fresh foods.

Fructose also appears to interfere with copper metabolism. This causes collagen and elastin being unable to form. Collagen and elastin are connective tissue which essentially hold the body together. A deficiency in copper can also lead to bone fragility, anemia, defects of the arteries and bone, infertility, high cholesterol levels, heart attacks and ironically enough an inability to control blood sugar levels.

The Research

Research suggests that fructose actually promotes disease more readily than glucose. This is because glucose is metabolized by every cell in the body, and fructose must be metabolized by the liver.

Tests on animals show that the livers of animals fed large amounts of fructose develop fatty deposits and cirrhosis of the liver. This is similar to the livers of alcoholics.

Very few agave studies have been documented, and most involved rats. There have been no clinical studies done on its safety for diabetics.

Fructose - Blood Glucose, Leptin

It is important to understand that the glucose in other sugars are converted to blood glucose, fructose is a relatively unregulated source of fuel that your liver converts to fat and cholesterol.

A significant danger here is that fructose does not stimulate your insulin secretion or enhance leptin production, which is involved in appetite regulation.

Because insulin and leptin act as key signals in regulating how much food you eat, as well as your body weight, dietary fructose can also contribute to increased food intake and weight gain.

Weight Loss

Fructose is one type of sugar you'll definitely want to avoid, no matter what the source is. Therefore, "healthy chocolate" does not have any weight loss benefits.

We now understand that chocolate has no weight loss benefits, we also know that it provides a feeling of well being through a sense of euphoria. The coca solids in dark chocolate contain alkaloids such as theobromine and phenethylamine, which have physiological effects on the body. It has been linked to serotonin levels in the brain.

In Summary

My recommendation is that if you are going to eat this gourmet chocolate it would be better than eating chocolate bars (albeit more expensive). I would not suggest consuming a lot of it on a regular basis and don't expect it will offer you any real medicinal benefits.

Does Gourmet Cat Food Really Taste Better?

In recent years, there has been a serious surge in the production of so called "premium" or "gourmet" cat food, and people are beginning to wonder if these more expensive brands on the market are actually worth all the hype, and of course the money. These gourmet brands are meant to taste more lavish than the traditional products found in the average supermarket. Gourmet cat food sales are increasing at a very fast rate in an industry that is consistently evolving to produce higher quality products. The question that pet owners need to ask is whether the additional cost of these luxury products is really worth it?

One of the primary reasons why there is such an increase in demand for these products is because consumers are looking for products that are closer to the quality of home prepared foods. Current research is supporting that inferior ingredients in cat food can be detrimental to the health of the cat more and more people are looking for healthier alternatives. Many gourmet brands are touting the ability to provide high quality, natural cat food products based on ingredients that are more wholesome than traditional commercially prepared foods.

Every year we seem to see an increase in cat disease, obesity and other serious issues which can now be rectified to a degree by the healthfulness of gourmet cat food products. Most so-called gourmet products come in smaller packages which tend to discourage over feeding in order to fight obesity. These small packages are attractive both to consumers who are looking for dietary management, and for those who are looking for convenience when feeding their pets.

Many pet food brands, like Purina for example, offer a variety of different types of gourmet cat food these include "Fancy Feast" and "Gourmet Gold" for example. These brands claim to be restaurant quality, and come in a variety of different types and choices. The obvious benefit to the manufacturer is that they can demand a higher price for these luxury products. This is by putting increased care into the design, presentation and manufacturing of the food the company can fetch increased profits. Because consumers know the products are of a higher quality, they are generally willing to pay more.

There seems to be an implied understanding that the higher price means the higher quality when it comes to food products. This is not completely true, because gourmet cat food is not always offering a healthy balanced diet. The more common, discount brands can still create a balanced and healthy diet when mixed with the right ingredients. Cat owners should not assume that the gourmet brands are necessarily better.

Instead, they should consult their veterinarian to appraise which brand and food is ideal for each individual cat's needs. This is the most ideal way to determine which type will best suit your cat's requirements nutritionally. While improved taste may be the greatest feature of many of these products, gourmet cat food does not necessarily mean it contains improved nutrition.

Why Ordering Food Online Through a Food Website Is Really Catching On

People in Britain are real foodies. They love to eat gourmet food and they don't mind ordering food online as long as they get great taste at an affordable price. Most people in London and other famous cities in Britain eat out a couple of times per month on an average anyway. Now with the launch of many online food portals it has become decidedly easy to order food online. People are really trying out this interesting and delicious option.

A site like this can provide food for people in London, especially in the South London and East London areas within the postcodes E1 and E8 for East London and SE1, SE8, SE13, SE16 and SE17 for Southeast London, which cover places like Bermondsey, Surrey Quays, Rotherhithe, Deptford, New Cros and Peckham among others. Today, a site like this has become the place to go to for people who want to order food online and save themselves from the difficult process of actually visiting a restaurant and ordering from their half-baked menus which are almost always overpriced.

With a food site, ordering food online becomes a breeze because there is so much to order from. So, are you a pizza person or are you a Chinese food person? Do you want to try something exotic such as Indian food or Thai food? A site like this provides for everything, whether it is Chinese food or Indian takeaway food of even a pizza takeaway or delivery that you are hoping for.

The main thing that you should know here is that a site like this is tied in which a lot of restaurants and takeaways all over the East London and South London area. Some of these restaurants and takeaways are the Home Chinese Restaurant, Pizza Mania, Pizza Classico, Times Pizza, Moja Indian Takeaway, Royal Bengal Indian Takeaway, Noodle and Rice Chinese Takeaway, Thailand Restaurant, Curry Express, Poppy Hana Japanese Restaurant, Royal Palace Chinese Restaurant and the Mango Tree Indian Takeaway. All these restaurants serve different types of cuisine and you are surely going to find one to suit your mood, whatever the occasion might be.

If you want to order food online through a website, all you have to do find the restaurant which you want to order from. You are given local options which ensure that your food reaches you early. As soon as you order, the chefs are set into motion there preparing the food you ordered and you get the food at your home. Then you have to just dig in and enjoy the feast.

Londoners are loving the fact that they can order whatever food they like, from whichever kind of cuisine they want, and savour it from the pleasures of their homes. There is no more waiting for tables and trying to find a good restaurant with a good ambiance to eat in. A site can be one that brings the world's best tastes right into their homes and, quite understandably, the craze for ordering food online is really catching on in a city that values good food over most other things.

Is Gourmet Cat Food Really Tastier?

Looking along the aisles of your local pet food store, you will find an enormous selection of so-called gourmet cat foods available. These foods usually claim to include exotic human-like ingredients, such as shrimp, lobster, filet mignon, prawns, and even rare Kobe beef from Japan. The question is whether or not these foods taste better and are better for your cat.

Cats and Their Food

Cats need a different type of diet than humans and dogs. While the latter can eat and digest animal and plant matter fairly easily, cats are considered obligate carnivores. This means they are physically better able to digest meat products than anything else.

Another reason for the meat-heavy diet is a need for taurine, an acid found in the flesh of animals. Cats need taurine in their diets because their bodies can't produce it. Without taurine, cats can end up losing their sight.

You might think that offering your cat any type of meat-based food would appeal to them but that's not always the case. Cats can be such picky eaters they will literally starve themselves if they don't want to eat what is being offered.

And that brings us back to the main question: Are gourmet cat foods tastier?

Does it Taste Better?

The truth is that there's no real way humans can determine what tastes better for their cat. Cats are unique creatures. They have their own preferences when it comes to food. No third party can really predict what any one cat will like anymore than someone who doesn't know you can guess your dietary preferences.

Gourmet cat foods can be appealing because of their variety of flavours. Cats do enjoy a variety of flavours and can become bored if they are fed even something scrumptious day after day. However, some cats like to keep it simple and are just as happy eating the cheap foods.

The only way to know for sure what tastes best is to ask your cat.

The Bigger Question

While cats may have their own preferences for food, you need to make sure the food they choose from provides them with all of the nutrients they need for a healthy diet. Gourmet foods may cost more to buy but that doesn't necessarily mean they will provide the best health benefits for your cat.

When you choose a cat food, you need to look at the list of ingredients carefully. Here are some pointers:

First ingredient - On any cat food, the first ingredient should be some type of real meat or fish. You do not want "chicken meal," for example. If possible, the first handful of ingredients should all be real meat.

Anything artificial - Most foods do need some types of preservatives to keep it from spoiling. However, the food should not include artificial flavours or colours.

Filler ingredients - Cheap pet foods often contain a lot of filler, such as rice or grains, which doesn't do much for your pet's health but do help them cut their own production costs.

If you pay attention to labels using the pointers above, you'll be able to find the tastiest and the healthiest food for your cat.

Is Nutrisystem's Gourmet Line Of Food Really Good? Which Foods Are Best?

I often hear from people who are considering ordering the new Nutrisystem select line which includes the frozen foods that are often described as "gourmet" or restaurant quality. As this line is a little more expensive than the regular or basic line, a common question is if the food is really all that good and worth the additional cost.

In my opinion, the Nutrisystem gourmet food is quite good. I will tell you which foods I think are the best of the best below. And, I do think that it is worth the cost for most people. However, for some people the cost of the diet and the package that they order is a major consideration. So I do want to make clear that there are good and tasty items on the basic menu that doesn't cost any extra, which I will also discuss.

Very High Rated And "Good" Gourmet Foods From The Select Line: For breakfast, the highest rated "select" item is the home style pancakes. And I have to tell you that they are awesome and they are rated at nearly five stars. They are one of the items that make the extra money worth it. But the pancake mix on the basic and regular line is very good and very highly rated also. Sure, they aren't as convenient but their taste is also quite good. Also for breakfast on the gourmet line, you also have omelets and breakfast burritos which are rated highly, but there are plenty of basic items that are rated close to five stars.

On the lunch menu, I have three favorite items on the premiere, gourmet, or select menu. They are the meatball Parmesan melt, the steak and cheese melt, and the margherita pizza, all of which approach 5 stars. These entrées almost taste like something you would get at an Italian restaurant and they are among my favorites. But I should also tell you that there's really good lunch items off of the basic menu including the black beans and rice and the turkey hot dog.

On the dinner menu, my favorites off of the gourmet menu are the pepperoni pizza, the chicken enchiladas, and the sweet and sour chicken. But some basic items that are also delicious and highly rated are the pork wrap, the cheese ravioli, and the risotto.

I think that the dessert menu is a place where the gourmet foods really shine. The reason for this is that the gourmet meals are frozen so this lends itself to lots of delicious frozen desserts like frozen fudge bar and the caramel sundae. With that said, there are very few items on the basic snack and dessert menu that are not phenomenal. Standouts include the almond biscotti, the chocolate cake, and the buttered popcorn.

To fully answer the question posed, yes, the Nutrisystem gourmet food is very good. And yes, I believe that it is worth the extra money. But if you don't have the extra money to spend, there are some very good items on the basic or cheaper menu as well.

Gourmet Cooking - Is It Really As Difficult As It Seems?

One of the very best things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating. And what a pleasure it must be to be able to touch peoples lives and please them with our cooking.

Now gourmet cooking does not really mean complicated dishes presented with extravagant grandeur. The beauty of gourmet recipes is in their simplicity, their freshness and of course presentation. It incorporates creating a subtle balance of flavours and taking your guests on a culinary experience that they will never forget.

I know you may feel that that gourmet meals are beyond your reach, what with all the skill involved in preparing the food and the fast paced lifestyle that we are now resigned to follow. Where will you find the time to learn the art that is gourmet cooking and then to prepare meals that require such careful preparation and precision in the jam packed schedule that you have?

So here's something that will make you feel a lot better. ITS NOT ALL THAT DIFFICULT!

Daunting as it may seem, gourmet cooking is essentially making use of the best possible ingredients, creating a dish that pleases your senses (even if it is as simple as mashed potatoes) and presenting it with flair. There is a history behind every dish waiting to be explored. Every corner of this world, every culture, every country has something new to contribute to your food adventure. And knowing and exploring this uniqueness of each cuisine, understanding the key ingredients of every dish and just experimenting and trying new recipes is what makes you a gourmet cook. It doesn't have to be about complicated techniques, expensive ingredients and pretentious plating. Regional specialties cooked slowly with care and attention are gourmet cooking. When most food is fast food, slow food is gourmet food.

You can join a course to learn the basic skills, or refer cook-books that will offer a wide variety of content on techniques, skills and recipes, but in the end just like any other art form, gourmet cooking is instinctive. You just need to widen your horizon in term of your food experience and begin your culinary adventure that will last a lifetime. In the end cooking is about the heart. It's about love and pleasing people. It's about your passion for food. And eventually its all about YOU.

Paris is actually the Centre of Gourmet Food throughout Europe?

Paris is a city of phenomenal restaurants, bistros and quaint tea sedans, as well as the little coffee which we heard so much. These establishments serve a variety of fine gourmet foods from the elegant food dishes from the region, including the ethnic cuisine restaurants that make you feel at home, and a variety of many different foods you will never be able to sample them all.

Fresh food lovers will appreciate the markets that exist in Paris where he is able to walk and rub elbows with the locals, as you can experience the thrill of open-air markets and the taste of fresh produce such as fruits and vegetables and organic foods.

Naturally refined high-end is what I'm known for Paris and if you're looking for that you'll find no shortage of choices in Paris. Gourmet shops as you will find a wide selection Layfayette of regional gourmet foods and fine wines from around the world. The archive is very popular and a great place to buy local food to cook meals, if you do not want to eat out all the time there are.

If you're not a connoisseur fancy food and more are just a bite quickly and return to explore the area you can find a wide assortment of familiar haunts if you're an American in particular. You will be able to eat in pretty much any fast food plants bigger than you are accustomed to from home like Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Burger King and McDonald, where you will be able to drink a beer with your burger if you choose so.

I suggest that you try to blend in and enjoy the local culture and local food as you possibly can. You will see that many of the local Diners and restaurants have budget menus with cheaper deals that many of the locals to participate. Try some of the rare flavours that you may not get the chance to try again.

Although Paris is known as the gourmet capital that not everything is what it is, there is also the regional native foods. And one good thing about these kinds of food that are good markets, and the locals prefer it as I have said. Take advantage of the opportunity to explore new foods and you can explore the sights that Paris has to offer.
