Sauces to make at home

No matter what I say or anyone else says, a lot of people still do at home their sauces. If you want to give it a shot, here is a list of items that you require to make your sauce.

1. The stock: most gourmet sauces require you to have quality stocks as the base. It is also the most time consuming in any sauce. You need to find the bones and trimmings that will be roasted in the oven and they are cooked with herbs, seasonings etc. Certainly not an easy job.

2. the recipe: Oh, it's so easy to find a wrong recipe for a gourmet sauce and so hard to find the right one. You might be able to download 1 million recipes via the internet. But don't expect any of them to be ' finger lick ' material.

Why do it, when you can buy?

The bottom line is that you have many more options at your fingertips. There are several companies that have an amazing range of gourmet sauces. All you have to do is buy them and try them out.

Gourmet cooking may seem inaccessible, something only wealthy people can enjoy, or even intimidating. There's no reason to feel this way about it. And you can tell what quality tastes like, right? Then you have the necessary tools to be an amateur gourmet.

To begin with, what makes a certain style of cooking "gourmet"? Gourmet cooking utilizes fresh, high quality ingredients. Take something common like garlic, for example. You can buy dry powdered garlic in the spice aisle at any grocery store. The gourmet will avoid this, though. They'll even walk by the jars of chopped garlic. Only freshly chopped garlic will do for the gourmet cook. Another example is basil. Let's say you have a recipe calling for basil. Again, you could get a jar of dried basil flakes from the spice aisle, or you can find fresh bagged basil leaves in the produce section. Gourmet recipes will prefer the fresh stuff. Better yet, grow your own! Whenever possible, if you can use ingredients you grew yourself, you'll find that they make a world of difference in the taste of your gourmet experiments.

Another word for gourmets is "epicurean". An epicurean is someone who likes only the finest food and drink. Or you can describe a gourmet as a "connoisseur". Like an epicurean, connoisseurs are people who know what's good and what isn't.

To get into gourmet cooking, there are a few ways you can go about learning how. Most obvious are books. Your local bookstore will have plenty of selections on cooking for novices. Don't be intimidated. There's tons of help out there for the newbie. Often grocery stores will have books which are meant to introduce you to gourmet cooking. Another resource for the budding gourmet chef is local restaurants. Nobody's going to give away their secrets but just by going out to eat in nice restaurants every so often and trying things you've never had before, you'll develop a broader range in taste and expand your knowledge of food. Don't be afraid to ask your server to describe an item to you which you don't know about. Ask what goes into the sauce. Ask what's sprinkled on top. Take mental notes and give it a try at home.

Of course you can always finds tons of information on the internet. The internet is chock full of information of all sorts and gourmet cooking is no exception. Innumerable sites provide recipes and cooking advice. Countless forums have been set up to aid the novice and give the experts a place to trade tips and recipes. Why Children Should Enjoy Gourmet Ingredients, And Why It Doesn't Cost The Earth

One of the problems with gourmet ingredients is that so many people tend to assume that they're really more for adults than for children. By seeing gourmet food and cooking in this way not only are people denying children the right to experience real, genuine tastes, but they may well be setting children up as fussy eaters.

Now don't assume that by this I mean that families should head out and start buying crates of highly expensive gourmet ingredients, because that's going to the complete opposite extreme. There is however a perfectly manageable happy medium in which families can help engage children with food and cooking in a positive way that may well have a lasting effect on their attitude towards food for years to come.

Indeed, often it is the habits and opinions we have based on our taste experiences as children which sets us on a fairly rigid track for the rest of our lives. So it's important to get this right, whilst at the same time being very aware that this is not the time for overspending on lavish and unnecessary ingredients.

But to understand why gourmet ingredients can be made both affordable and accessible it's best to consider a couple of examples. Clearly you're not going to win your children over by serving up your best foi gras, nicely complimented by a side plate of wilted spinach. But this isn't what gourmet ingredients are necessarily about.

For example, a worrying number of children actually seem to think that vanilla ice cream means ice cream without any extra flavouring. The same goes for yoghurt. It seems that so many children see vanilla not as a flavour, or even as an ingredient, but as an alternative word to 'plain'. Why not for a change introduce children to a vanilla seed pod? Just showing them where the vanilla flavour comes from, and then using this in cooking, perhaps to make a cake, would get children to start thinking about ingredients and words a little differently.

Another idea is pizza, because almost every child enjoys this! By getting the children involved with making their own pizza at home you can introduce them to inexpensive gourmet ingredients and herbs very easily. You can of course make your own pizza dough (and there are several variations of this, including whole wheat crust) or you can buy pizza dough from the shop.

Ingredients to try include things such as sun dried tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, and perhaps some basil and olive oil. By using quality, fresh ingredients you can create a nutritious, healthy meal that tastes great, is relatively inexpensive, and helps introduce children to gourmet food in a way that could help set them up for life.

If you're looking for affordable gourmet ingredients then I strongly recommend taking a look at The Good Food Network. Not only is it a great place to buy French food and ingredients, but there's also plenty of advice and recipes too.
